  • Story Text: The coup and counter coup in Khartoum have left their mark. Buildings show the scars of skirmishes between forces loyal to President Nimeiry and the troops who staged the mutiny. The fighting has also left its mark in the political scene. The President seems to have strengthened his position since his forces fought back and restored him to power. Now communists, believed responsible for organising the coup, have been arrested and purged from the armed forces.

    SYNOPSIS: Khartoum, capital of Sudan, is back to normal following the recent coup and successful counter coup by forces loyal to President Nimeiry. Troops still patrol the streets, but the isolated outbreaks of fighting which followed the counter coup have ended.

    This film was shot only hours before President Nimeiry ordered all units of the Sudanese army to report to barracks. Six military courts have been set up in Khartoum to try soldiers suspected of taking part in the attempted coup.

    The scars of battle can be seen on the republican palace. The worst damage was done by armoured forces loyal to the President, when they attempted to dislodge the mutineers.

    The order for the units to return to barracks came after the announcement that the Sudanese communist party leader, Abdel Khalek Mahgoub had been arrested and would be tried soon. This virtually ends the existence of the party in Sudan. Known members have been arrested and will stand trial.

    The Khartoum Government said that civilians loyal to President Nimeiry discovered where the communist party chief was hiding following the collapse of the coup and handed him over to the authorities.
