- Story Text: Chechen fighters holding more than 100 hostages opened fresh talks with officials from the Russian region of Dagestan on Saturday (January 13), but there was no sign of an end to the three-day stand-off.
On Friday (January 12) negotiations took place between the Chechen rebel leader Salman Raduyev and Dagestani representatives near Pervomaiskoye.
The Chechen rebels, fighting for independence from Russia, have been holding 200 hostages in Pervomaiskoye three days after occupying a hospital and taking hostages in Kizlyar, Dagestan, on the border with Chechnya.
In Friday's negotiations, the rebels brought with them four women hostages as a human shield.
Also on Friday, the rebels freed eight of the hostages, a Russian general said.
General Alexander Mikhailov said the rebels had released four women, three children and a teenager, but did not say if any deal had been made.
