- Story Text: Fierce fighting has erupted between Israeli forces and
Palestinian gunmen in the Gaza Strip overnight, casting a
shadow on diplomatic efforts to start talks between the sides.
Security forces from both sides in the continuing
conflict assessed the damage from another night of violence on
Sunday (August 19).
Two Israelis, including a six-year-old, were lightly
wounded in a shooting attack on a bus near the Jewish
settlement of Neve Yaacov on the outskirts of Jerusalem on
Saturday night (August 18).
Elsewhere at least two Israeli missiles slammed into a
Palestinian security post in Gaza late on Saturday, just hours
after Palestinians launched seven mortar bombs at a Jewish
settlement in the strip. Three Palestinians were wounded in
the strike. On Sunday morning Palestinian security forces
could be seen sifting through the debris.
In another incident a six-month-old Palestinian baby was
wounded by bullets when Israeli troops shot at a car near a
checkpoint near the West Bank town of Qalqilya.
A Palestinian official said Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon
Peres had contacted some Palestinian representatives in
new effort to end more than 10 months of violence.
As the Israeli cabinet started its weekly meeting on
Sunday (August 19), Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's
spokesman Raanan Gissin said Israel would continue to work on
two fronts, to fight terror and to resume political contacts
with the Palestinians.
Meanwhile, Israeli police beefed up security in Israeli
cities as the country went on high alert because of warnings
that Palestinian suicide bombers were planning a fresh spate
of attacks.
This did not prevent Israeli troops from firing at a group
of Palestinians walking on an unpaved road near the city of
Nablus early on Sunday, killing one man, Mueen Abu Lawi, and
injuring five others.
