- Story Text: One Iraqi has been killed in a firefight with U.S.
troops in Baghdad after Iraqi guerillas fired a rocket
propelled grenade at a Humvee.
Iraqi guerrillas fired a rocket- propelled grenade
that set ablaze a U.S. military vehicle in central Baghdad
on Thursday (August 7), inflicting U.S. casualties,
witnesses said.
U.S. troops exchanged fire with gunmen in nearby
buildings after a blast set a Humvee vehicle ablaze. At
least one Iraqi bystander was killed as U.S. soldiers
sprayed the streets with bullets.
A U.S. army spokesman said there had been an improvised
bomb attack in the area but had no information on
casualties.
Reuters photographer Oleg Popov who was at the scene
said U.S. soldiers opened fire after the attack, killing a
man whose body lay spreadeagled on the road, blood oozing
from his head onto the baking-hot tarmac.
The witnesses said the Humvee was driving near the Palm
Hotel when guerrillas fired the grenade. Four soldiers were
inside the vehicle when it was hit and they suffered
serious wounds, they said.
A U.S. force engaged the attackers, exchanging intense
small arms fire.
The army said that in an earlier gunbattle in central
Baghdad on Wednesday night, guerrillas killed two American
soldiers and wounded another, along with an Iraqi
interpreter.
The deaths brought to 55 the number of U.S. troops
killed in hostile action since May 1.
