- Story Text: Firefighters day is traditionally celebrated in
France the day before Bastille day, when fire brigades all
over the country hold an open day to the public putting on
exhibitions and demonstrations. This year, French firefighters
invited New York's firefighters to Paris, as a tribute to
those who died on September 11.
United States and French firefighters signed an
official twinning agreement on Saturday (July 13) to tighten
co-operation and solidarity between the Paris and New York
fire departments.
French government officials, including the Mayor of Paris,
Bertrand Delanoe, the Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy and
Defence Minister Michele Alliot-Marie, attended the ceremony.
The commander of Parisian firefighters, General Debarnot
and New York's fire chief, Daniel Nigro signed the agreement,
witnessed by 75 relatives of firefighters killed on September
11, 10 months after the attacks on New York, which claimed the
lives of 343 U.S. firefighters.
One of the invited guests, Jerry Warnock, a firefighter
who participated in the rescue operations on September 11,
added that he was honoured to be participating in the
ceremony. He said it was something he would never forget.
New York's fire chief Daniel Nigri said:
"It is a very emotional day to be here strengthening
friendship between the United States and France and the two
fire departments. And I think it is a direction we need to go
in this new century, direction of co-operation and
understanding and friendship. Together, we will learn to face
this new world better."
French firefighters were joined by their U.S. counterparts
later outside the Paris city hall, where hundreds gathered to
watch a joint mock rescue from a "burning" building.
The Paris Fire Brigade also put on a dazzling gymnastics
display.
These and similar exhibitions are staged all over France
for firefighters' day, which traditionally falls on the day
before Bastille Day (July 14).
On Sunday (July 14), the U.S. families will be invited to
attend the Bastille Day parade on the Champs Elysees.
