- Story Text: Syria announced it had shot down six Israeli planes on Monday (29th April) in continuing air and artillery battles on the Golan Heights.
An Israeli spokesman claimed four Syrian MIG fighters shot down. Israel denied losing any of its planes, but admitted fourteen soldiers killed in a Syrian artillery attack and a helicopter crash on top of Mount Hermon on Saturday (27th April).
On Monday, UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim received a letter from Israeli UN Representative Yosei Tekosh accusing Syrian of 39 ceasefire violations in the week April 22nd - April 29th.
Mr. Tekoah said the attacks had caused casualties. He then referred to Syrian Deputy Prime Minister Abdel-Hallim Khaddam, who told a Beirut newspaper that they Syrian struggle was not connected with US Secretary of State Dr. Henry Kissinger's forthcoming visit. The battle would continue, he said.
Mr. Tekoah said the Syrian attacks on the Golan Heights were therefore "a continued aggression that represented a premeditated and deliberate policy of the Syrian authorities".
Mount Hermon gives the Israelis an uninterrupted view to the Syrian capital damascus. Fighting took place as Dr. Kissinger and Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko held talks in Geneva on ways of ending the Middle East conflict.
