- Story Text: New York's bravest launched its new 2015 Calendar of Heroes in the heart of Manhattan on Tuesday (July 15).
This year, the calendar features its first female firefighter. Danae Mines is Ms. March.
"I think it's great. I would love to inspire other women to come on the job. I hope seeing my picture in the calendar inspires women," she said during a promotional event in Times Square.
Mines said she has been working for the FDNY for 14 years - nearly 11 of those years as a firefighter.
Mines works in The Bronx and is one of 41 female firefighters in the FDNY (Fire Department of New York).
"I love it because I'm from a neighborhood that's of foreign descent and I would like for people to see that you can come from a place like The Bronx and do something positive with your life," she said.
The calendar features 13 firefighters, one for each month and one for the calendar's full color, glossy cover.
John Kilian of Queens is Mr. December.
Kilian said he is happy the calendar features its first female firefighter.
"It's fantastic. I'm proud of her. I'm proud of everybody that was able to put this together. It's great. It's a great feeling."
Speaking about his shirtless photo, Kilian added, "I'm nervous. But you know, like I said, it's such a great feeling to be part of this. It's fantastic. I love what I'm doing and I love to be a part of the FDNY calendar."
Now on sale, the calendar sells for $15 (USD).
Proceeds from the calendar sales will go to benefit the FDNY Foundation, a non-profit organization that promotes fire safety. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
