- Story Text: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula arrived in Port-au-Prince on Thursday (February 25) to meet with his counterpart Rene Preval.
Preval greeted Lula as he got off the plane and the two immediately set off for a helicopter flight over Port-au-Prince to survey the damage from the January 12 earthquake.
Brazil has played a leading role in Haiti since 2004 when it took command of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), heading up peacekeeping operations.
The country lost 24 of its 1,200-strong contingent in the January quake, but Lula has pledged his ongoing support to Haiti.
Following the morning helicopter flight, the two leaders will hold a private meeting, sign agreements and later have a joint press conference.
Later in the day, Lula is expected to tour Brazil's new camp at the UN Logistics base, redesigned to accommodate a reinforcement of 900 more troops in March. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
