- Story Text: Gunman in Amman wounds six people, including three Lebanese and a Palestinian, then kills himself.
An unidentified gunman in Amman shot and wounded at least six musicians on Wednesday (July 16) after a concert in the capital before committing suicide, security officials said.
They said the incident took place after a performance by the Amman symphony orchestra with a Lebanese choir at the Roman amphitheatre in the congested downtown area of the capital.
A Jordanian security official said four of the musicians who were shot at by the gunman were Lebanese. The attacker shot himself in the head after being chased, a witness told Reuters.
The musicians' injuries were mostly light to moderate, although one was seriously hurt, another security official told Reuters.
A third security source said he thought the attacker had suspected the Lebanese musicians were Israelis. Israel's treatment of Palestinians has traditionally angered some in Jordan, where anti-Israeli feelings run high.
The same area of the capital has seen attacks against foreigners in recent years and in September 2006 a lone gunman opened fire on a group of tourists killing a British man and wounding six other people.
Before then gunman died, government spokesman Nasser Judeh said: "The attack took place after 10 pm in downtown, near Hashemia Square, when some passengers who were attempting to go on board of a bus in that area, someone shot at them and six were injured, but thanks God they were slight injuries."
The assailant was chased by police for 200 metres before shooting himself among bystanders.
Judeh said the attacker, who is yet to be identified, was sent to hospital in serious condition, dismissing that the attack was linked to a terrorist group. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
