- Story Text: Palestinian policemen run in street after gunshots heard by a Reuters witness near Palestinians PM's compound in Ramallah.
Palestinian police traded gunfire with unknown assailants at the prime minister's compound in downtown Ramallah on Wednesday (August 8), a Reuters witness said.
The exchange in the West Bank city lasted around a minute, several other witnesses also confirmed, and the sound of ambulances could be heard shortly thereafter.
There were no immediate reports of casualties.
Prime Minister Salam Fayyad was away touring the southern West Bank, near Hebron, at the time.
Fighting had subsided by the time Palestinian special forces arrived at the scene, a few minutes after the incident began. The police launched searches and frisked people near the scene, apparently searching for weapons.
A Palestinian security source told Reuters an investigation had been launched into the incident.
The shooting occurred in an area under limited Palestinian self-rule by a so-called Palestinian Authority, in West Bank territory Israel captured in a 1967 war, and which Palestinians seek for a state.
The Palestinian Authority has launched a muscular security crackdown around the West Bank in recent weeks, arresting scores of suspects in a security sweep that has prompted some anger at President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah-led government. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
