- Story Text: Middle East peace high on agenda as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu holds talks in Cairo with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo on Tuesday (December 29) to discuss efforts to restart peace talks as well as ongoing negotiations over a prisoner swap between Israel and Hamas.
Efforts to restart talks are likely to complicated by Israel's announcement on Monday (December 28) that it plans to build nearly 700 new homes in a settlement in Arab East Jerusalem, which Palestinians hope to make the future capital of their state.
The international community considers Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian land illegal, and the United States has called for Israel to freeze settlement construction.
Under U.S. pressure, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced in November a 10-month freeze of new housing starts in West Bank settlements but said it would not include the municipal borders Israel has defined for Jerusalem.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has demanded a complete cessation of settlement activity, saying he would not resume peace talks with Israel until it did so.
Israel and the United States have called on Abbas to return to peace negotiations, suspended for the past year, without preconditions. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
