- Story Text: Israeli troops on an arrest raid in central Ramallah on Wednesday (May 24) exchanged fire with Palestinian gunmen and two Palestinians were killed in the clash, hospital sources and witnesses said.
Mohammed al-Shoubaki, a senior financier for Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad, was taken into custody by the troops before they withdrew, his family said.
At least 10 other Palestinians were wounded during the hour-long clash in the West Bank city's main shopping area, some by live gunfire and others by rubber bullets, the director of Ramallah's hospital said.
The Israeli army said a soldier was lightly wounded.
Israeli soldiers often carry out arrest raids into Ramallah, the Palestinian seat of government, but they rarely turn into major confrontations. The last major daytime raid was more than a year ago.
An Israeli military source said the troops were trying to make arrests when they were confronted by stone-throwing Palestinians and gunmen.
Sworn to the Jewish state's destruction, Islamic Jihad is one of several militant groups spearheading a more than 5-year-old Palestinian uprising. Shoubaki's family said he was released from an Israeli prison last year after serving 20 months of a 20-year sentence.
