- Story Text: In palace gardens gorgeous with cherry-blossom, Japanese Emperor Hirohito and Empress Nagako entertained Japanese members of the diplomatic corps and other dignitaries, Tokyo, Apr 12.
Over 1,000 guests saw spectacles recalling Japan's diverse culture and lengthy history. Among the garden-party's highlights was a performance of the Bugaku dance - brought from China 1600 years ago - and now only danced on ceremonial occasions; its slow-moving rhythm is accented by ancient lutes and oboes, and bears striking resemblance to Indian and Indonesian dancer.
Polo - also brought from China, 1500 years ago - fell into general dis-use in the 14th Century, but is another facet of their culture the Japanese keep for special occasions. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
