- Story Text: One man was shot and another wounded in a bomb blast
in Santo Domingo as an anti-government strike called by
left-wing unions closed most small businesses, schools and
public transport in the Dominican Republic.
Dominican Republic police and soldiers armed with
automatic weapons patrolled the country Tuesday (May 18) to
maintain calm and keep supermarkets, factories, large banks
and major roads open on the first day of a planned two-day
strike.
The protest, called by the Collective of Popular
Organisations and the Coordinating Committee of Popular
Organisations, was the largest of several dealing with the
same issues through the country in recent weeks.
It was called to demand that President Leonel Fernandez
improve services, raise salaries, stop the privatisation of
public businesses and cut food and fuel prices.
A young man was shot and wounded in the northeastern city
of San Francisco de Macoris and another was wounded when a
homemade bomb exploded in Azua, in the southern Dominican
Republic, according to radio reports.
In San Pedro de Macoris, 30 km from Santo Domingo, police
said bands of youths threw stones at cars, and burnt tires on
the streets to block traffic.
Thousands of people had trouble getting to work on Tuesday
(May 18) morning because far fewer public buses were operating
than usual. In some areas, including neighbourhoods on the
edge of Santo Domingo and in Santiago, the northern city
second in size to the capital, virtually everything appeared
to be closed.
Minister of the Interior and Police Norge Botello
denounced the strike as a political action backed by the
leftist opposition Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD).
