    Leftist guerrillas were suspected of assassinating a former Peruvian defence minister on Tuesday (9/1) as he parked his car at a Lima shopping centre.

    Four gunmen walked up to Enrique Lopez Albujar, a retired army general who served as defence minister until last year, and sprayed his car with sub-machine gun fire.

    Terrified onlookers cowered behind walls or dived to the ground during the attack outside a shopping centre in Lima's wealthy San Isidro neighbourhood.

    No one claimed responsibility for the attack but police said it bore all the hallmarks of the Maoist Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso) guerrilla group, which has been fighting for a decade to overthrow the government.

    Police said they could not rule out the possibility that the attack was the work of a rival group, the pro-Cuban Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement.
