- Story Text: French President Francois Hollande said on Saturday (February 21) that Greece had shown a "strong sense of responsibility" in its economic negotiations with the European Union, after an agreement was announced in Brussels on Friday (February 20).
Speaking at an international agricultural show in Paris, Hollande said Greece needed time and space to develop its economy.
"On Greece, yesterday an agreement was reached in which Greece needs to respect its engagements to get the funding that will last the next four months. We need to make sure that Greece has the means to develop its economy and at the same time give them time to come up with principles and reforms that are in the European Union framework," he said.
In return, Greece has committed to implement a series of unspecified reforms over the coming months.
"I think a good balance has been reached for Greece. And it was made possible because Greece has shown a strong sense of responsibility and Europe has shown a lot of solidarity. Those are the principles that I have laid down," Hollande said.
Friday's agreement was clinched just a week before Greece's 240 billion euro (270 billion US dollars) bailout programme expires. It is aimed at buying time for both sides to agree on a longer-term deal to ease the burden of Greece's bailout loans. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
