- Story Text: After intermittently firing a double-barrelled shotgun at policemen, news photographers, and reporters, during a 30 hours siege, 18-year-old textile worker Jackie Jennings was smoked out with tear gas bombs April 13 at Pulaski, Virginia, U.S.
Jennings had bolted from police when apprehended for a motoring offence. He grabbed his 10-year-old sister-in-law as hostage and barricaded himself into his father-in-law's house.
Police followed by reporters and spectators surrounded the house, kept at bay with burse of fire from Jennings shotgun. Jennings ordered his sixteen-year-old wife be brought to him: this was refused.
Psychiatrists, policemen, a newspaper editor, all called on him to surrender: he replied with more shots, threats to rape the 10-year-old girl.
During the night of April 12/13 the police made their attack. As tear gas filled the house Jennings was overpowered carried to a car and taken to the local hospital for mental examination. The girl told reporters she had not been harmed, and had spent most of the waiting hours asleep.
