SYNOPSIS: In Turkey a 14 year old girl who was held captive in a flat for 50 hours by two gunmen has thanked the soldiers who saved her. Sibel Urkan, the daughter of a major in the Turkish Army, was rescued on Tuesday when troops burst into the flat where she was being held. Doctors say she is getting over the strain and shock of her ordeal. The martial law commander, General Faik Turun, thanked the troops on behalf of the nation.
The troops of Sibel's father's unit surrounded the flat for 50 hours and did not move until the siege was over. The gunmen burst into the flat on Sunday as police pursued them to question them about the kidnapping and slaying of an Israeli diplomat. One gunman was fatally injured at the end of the siege. The other, said now to be out of danger, is being guarded in this building.
