- Story Text: In the worst attack on foreigners in Egypt in recent years, a gunman opened fire on a group of tourists in a luxury Cairo hotel on Tuesday night, (October 26), killing three people and wounding four others, security sources said.
Police officers said a lone gunman entered a restaurant in the Semiramis Intercontinental hotel overlooking the River Nile at about 10.30 p.m. (2030 GMT), and shot foreign tourists as they ate dinner and an Egyptian waiter who tried to protect them.
Security sources said three people were killed and four injured. The nationalities of those killed were not immediately known, but one of the wounded was reportedly Australian and another was American.
Police said the attacker surrended to hotel security staff after the attack. His identity was not immediately known. Cairo police General Abdel Rahim Kenawi described the attack and said the man seemed to be "mentally ill".
The attacker reportedly sat quietly in the restaurant for some time before taking out a revolver and getting up to fire at the tourists. A hotel guest said he saw the Egyptian waiter with two gunshot wounds, but it was not known if he was among the dead. The wounded were taken to Cairo's central Qasr al-Aini hospital, where some were described as being in critical condition.
It was the worst attack on foreigners in Egypt in recent years.
Moslem militants have targeted Egypt's vital industry over the past year, killing three foreigners and wounding over a dozen in various attacks.
