- Story Text: Philippine police shot dead four gunmen in a shootout at the Asia headquarters of an American missionary group in Manilaon Tuesday (February 27) after the gunmen seized two caretakers as hostages in a robbery attempt.
None of the missionaries of the Church of the Nazarene werein the building at the time of the early morning raid during which the gunmen ransacked the place looking for money.
The hostages, a middle-aged couple, were unharmed.
"The motive, I believe, was robbery because the victims were ordered to open up the safe which was located inside one of the rooms in the house," said Police Chief Uldarico Jamora.
The gunmen were shot by police commandos after refusing to surrender and attempting to shoot their way out of the two-story building.
Police were alerted to the presence of the gunmen in the building when neighbours saw them dragging inside a Filipino couple working as caretakers into the house.
The couple were sweeping outside the building, when the four men, armed with revolvers, burst in, witnesses said.
While the robbers were ransacking the offices, two cars carrying several missionaries arrived and blew their horns for the caretakers to open the gate.
Startled, the gunmen panicked, enabling the Filipino couple to flee the house, police said.
The Church of the Nazarene is a Protestant group with its international headquarters in Kansas City, in the United States.
Its Philippine offices serve as the main base of church operations in 20 Asian countries.
