- Story Text: Gunmen shot and seriously wounded a Jewish settler driving in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday (November 1).
There was no immediate claim of responsibility but Moslem militant Palestinian groups opposed to peace with Israel have in the past targeted Israelis in drive-by shootings on West Bank roads.
An Israeli ambulance spokesman said the settler was in serious condition.
A settlers' spokesman said three bullets were fired at the man's car at the entry to Kochav Yaacov settlement beside the main road linking Jerusalem to the Palestinian West Bank city of Ramallah.
He told reporters it was unclear if the shots were fired from a United Nations car he said was reported stolen a short time before the incident and found abandoned in a nearby town afterwards.
Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) leader Yasser Arafat said the PLO was against such attacks. "They do not help," he said.
Also on Wednesday, Israeli planes attacked Moslem guerrilla targets in south Lebanon in retaliation for attacks that killed two pro-Israeli militiamen and wounded three Israeli soldiers, security sources said.
The sources said two fighter jets fired eight rockets into Louwaizeh hills in Iqlim al-Toufah, a mountain ridge controlled by guerrillas of the pro-Iranian Hizbollah north of Israel's south Lebanon occupation zone.
There was no immediate report of casualties in the raid.
Earlier on Wednesday, Hizbollah (Party of God) guerrillas killed two Israeli-backed South Lebanon Army (SLA) militiamen and wounded three when they attacked their post in south Lebanon, SLA sources said.
Three Israeli soldiers were wounded in a separate attack in the south when the Moslem militant guerrillas set off a bomb near an Israeli patrol in the border occupation zone.
The pro-Iranian Hizbollah (Party of God) heads the Islamic Resistance movement fighting Israel and the SLA in a 15-km (nine-mile) wide occupation zone.
Israel wants Syria, which has 35,000 troops in Lebanon, to rein in the guerrillas. Syria says the guerrillas have every right to resist foreign occupation.
