- Story Text: The United States has completed delivery of the first batch of 105-millimetre field guns for the Cambodian Army under its military aid programme.
The last guns were flown to Phnom penh on Saturday (8 Jan) - direct from the United States.
Cambodian officers say the delivery brings the total number of howitzers flow in during the week to 26.
SYNOPSIS: A United States C-141 transport plane flew into Phnom Penh on Saturday with a further cargo of military aid for the khmer Republic. Boxes of ammunition and a number of 105-millimetre field guns were the final part of the first batch of howitzers to be presented to the Cambodian Army under the United States military aid programme.
A lack of modern artillery and ammunition is a frequent complaint among Cambodian field officers. Prior to this week's delivery, the United States military aid had consisted largely of second-hand weapons--some reconditioned Second World War models.
Cambodian officers say Saturday's shipment brings the total number of howitzers delivered during the week to 26. Technically the guns are known as M-102s. Each gun costs 62-and-a-half thousand dollars (25-thousand pounds sterling). Weapons like these are already widely uses in South Vietnam.
The Cambodian Army hopes to put the new equipment into service with its troops in the field without delay.
