- Story Text: Troops in Somalia as part of Operation Restore Hope on Wednesday (January 13) stormed houses in the capital Mogadishu, looking for weapons a day after the death of the first United States (U.S.) marine since the operation began.
Italian troops broke into houses with axes after reports that caches of guns were being held in homes in north Mogadishu. Guns and passports were seized.
U.S. military officials in Mogadishu said that a marine was shot and killed on Tuesday (January 12) night when on patrol near the city airport. They said at least one of the Somali gunmen was killed but his body appeared to have been taken away by his comrades.
A marine officer said the attack seemed to be premeditated and well-planned. A colleague of the marine, identified as Private Wright, said the dead soldier had been a good friend. He added that he did not understand why Somalis had killed him because marines were just trying to help them.
