- Story Text: Over 40 Palestinians were wounded by bullets and
shrapnel during a fierce overnight gun-battle with Israeli
troops in the southern Gaza Strip.
Around 70 Palestinians were also wounded in the battle
on Monday (February 12) which lasted for around two hours and
forced many Palestinian residents to flee their homes.
The shooting erupted in an area which has become a
frequent flashpoint for violence since a Palestinian uprising
erupted in late September after peace talks became deadlocked.
At least 387 people, mostly Palestinians, have been killed in
the unrest.
Palestinian hospital officials in Khan Younis reported 20
people had sustained gunshot wounds and the rest were wounded
from shrapnel, or what hospital officials said was a type of
teargas that makes people hysterical.
The Israeli army dismissed the charge as Palestinian
propaganda.
An army spokesman said the Palestinian gunmen had fired an
anti-tank rocket in the direction of an Israeli army post, but
it fell short and landed in a Palestinian area. He denied
Palestinian reports the army had fired tank shells rockets.
The head of a group of Palestinian gunmen who fought in
the battle told Reuters that 50 gunmen had participated in the
battle using automatic machineguns and other types of guns.
But he denied firing an anti-tank rocket.
Several Palestinian houses caught fire during the exchange
and Palestinian witnesses said several rifle-propelled
grenades hit a mosque on the outskirts of the refugee camp.
Israeli soldiers and Palestinian gunmen also fought a gun
battle near the West Bank town of Bethlehem. Palestinian
gunmen fired at an Israeli bus driving on a road near
Jerusalem where an Israeli settler was killed on Sunday
(February 11).
Soldiers also killed two Palestinians earlier on Monday.
Ziad Abu Sway died after Israeli soldiers opened fire on a
bus carrying Palestinian labourers near the West Bank town of
Bethlehem.
Atef Ahmed al-Nabulsi was buried late on Monday night
after he was shot dead near the West Bank city of Ramallah .
The violence followed the killing by Palestinian gunmen of
Jewish settler Tsahi Sasson, 35, as he drove along a road
outside Jerusalem on Sunday.
