- Story Text: Two Palestinian gunmen have been killed and an
unidentified Israeli has been seriously wounded following an
ambush in the West Bank city of Hebron, Israel radio has said.
The violence punctuated vows by Palestinian hardliners to
defy Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas's bid to make
good on a promise to demilitarise a 32-month-old uprising for
statehood, threatening to strangle the latest international
peace initiative almost at birth.
Militants opposed decisions at landmark summits which U.S.
President George W. Bush held in Aqaba, Jordan on Wednesday
with Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and with Arab
leaders in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt a day earlier.
The participants endorsed a U.S.-backed "road map" for
peace between Israel and Palestinians charting an end to
violence and a start to mutual confidence-building steps leading
to creation of a Palestinian state in Gaza and the West Bank in
2005.
