- Story Text: A Palestinian gunman has opened fire on a car in
central Israel, killing a seven-year-old girl. Israeli
government spokesman Avi Pazner condemned the attack.
In the southern part of the Gaza Strip Israeli forces have
destroyed several Palestinian houses.
Gunmen killed an Israeli girl on a road in central
Israel on Tuesday (June 17), feeding a cycle of violence that
has battered a peace plan U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell
will try to rescue in a new Middle East visit on Friday (June
20).
Medics said the dead girl was seven and identified two
people wounded in the attack as her five-year-old sister and
her father.
The attack on a car near Kibbutz Eyal late on Tuesday was
launched shortly after Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud
Abbas failed in another bid to persuade militants to call a
truce with Israel.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the
shooting which the army said was carried out by Palestinians.
Israeli Government spokesman Avi Pazner said it was up to
the Palestinian Authority to stop the attacks against Israel.
If it failed to do so Israel had "pledged that we will do it
ourselves and take all necessary measures to make this
bloodshed stop."
In the southern Gaza Strip Israeli Defence Force soldiers
demolished homes which they said belonged to Palestinian
militants.
More than 50 people have died in tit-for-tat
Israeli-Palestinian attacks since Abbas, U.S. President George
W. Bush and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon affirmed a
peace "road map" at a summit in Aqaba, Jordan, on June 4.
The "road map" envisages the creation of a Palestinian
state by 2005, mandates a crackdown on militant groups along
with Israeli troop pullbacks in the West Bank and Gaza.
Facing the prospect of the collapse of the most ambitious
Middle East peace plan in more than two years, the United
States said Powell would come to Israel on Friday to mediate.
Sharon has ruled out concessions unless Abbas subdues
Hamas, a fundamentalist Islamic group at the forefront of
suicide bombings that have killed scores of Israelis since the
start of a Palestinian uprising for statehood in September
2000.
