- Story Text: Two Palestinian brothers killed overnight were buried
on Saturday (November 25, 2000).
A pitched night time battle between Israeli troops and
Palestinian gunmen left the two dead and one more Palestinian
in a serious condition in hospital. The gunfire and shelling
made residents of the Gaza Strip flee their homes.
Thousands of mourners have attended funerals for the
latest victims of the fighting in the Middle East. Two
Palestinian brothers, aged 28 and 26, were killed in the West
Bank village of Kafr Kahlil. Witnesses said they died when
heavy-calibre Israeli fire hit an empty house they were using
as cover.
Funerals were also planned for Saturday (November 25)
for two Palestinian protesters shot dead by Israeli troops in
clashes in the West Bank towns of Jenin and Qalqilya.
A 25-year-old Israeli army officer, a Jewish settler and
four Palestinians died during the day on Friday and in the
early hours of Saturday. This brings the death toll in eight
weeks of violence to 269, mostly Palestinians.
The renewed fighting comes as Israeli Prime Minister
Ehud Barak and Palestinian President Yasser Arafat agreed to
revive defunct liaison offices.
Overnight on Friday in Khan Younis, a large Palestinian
town on the Mediterranean coast, there were exchanges of fire
between the two sides.
In Gaza many Palestinians took their belongings and fled.
Saturday morning saw tensions rising once again in the
West Bank as the Israeli army bulldozed Palestinian vineyards
in Hebron, the reason given was that this was an effort to
stop Palestinians shooting at Jewish settlers in the disputed
territories.
One of the vineyard owners engaged in a dispute with
Israeli soldiers on his land saying: "Do you hear what I am
saying, you should leave, get out!"
An Israeli government source says Israel has agreed to
lift its blockade of Palestinian cities by the start, either
on Sunday or Monday, of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, but
only "on condition that violence stops from the Palestinian
side".
