- Story Text: At least seven people have been wounded in a gun battle
that flared when Israeli soldiers bulldozed Palestinian
buildings in a refugee camp near the Gaza-Egypt border.
Israel has said that it will use any necessary means to
end Palestinian attacks on Israelis. Palestinian officials
have condemned the latest Israeli incursion, adding that
Israel is declaring war against them.
Israeli soldiers and Palestinians fought a gun battle
in southern Gaza early on Thursday (May 10), when Israeli
troops destroyed Palestinian buildings adjacent to an
Israeli-controlled road along the Gaza-Egypt border.
Six Palestinians and a soldier were wounded and at least
three houses and two Palestinian police posts were destroyed
by Israeli bulldozers in Yebna refugee camp near the Egyptian
border.
Both the Palestinians and the Israeli army claimed the
area where the demolitions took place was under their control
according to a 1994 interim peace agreement.
Israel said that it will continue leading such an
operation in order to prevent Palestinian attacks on Israelis.
"In the future, if the Palestinian Authority does not
fulfil its part, we will continue to make these incursions as
required by the military situation on the ground, in order to
prevent attacks against our citizens" said Ariel Sharon's
spokesperson Raanan Gissin.
Palestinians say that Israel is waging war against them
and that international effort must be made to end these
attacks.
"There is a declared war by the government of Israel
against the Palestinian people despite all the efforts to
revive the peace process", said Nabil Shath, Palestinian
Minister of Planning and International Cooperations.
Meanwhile, Palestinian President Yasser Arafat has met
with Israeli opposition member Yossi Beilin in Gaza to discuss
the ongoing violence.
The Palestinians say Israel's policy of settling the
West Bank and Gaza Strip, lands it wants for a future state,
has fuelled its uprising which erupted in late September in
the vacuum of deadlocked peace negotiations.
At least 409 Palestinians, 79 Israelis and 13 Israeli
Arabs have been killed in more than seven months of fighting.
