- Story Text: Israeli army fires stun grenades, guns in Ramallah clashes.
Israeli forces raided Ramallah, the West Bank city
where Palestinian President Yasser Arafat is headquartered
on Tuesday (October 21), encircling a mosque using live
fire and tear gas to disperse hundreds of stone-throwers.
There were no immediate reports of casualties in the
raid on Ramallah, witnessed by Reuters correspondents.
Israeli military sources denied troops used live fire
and described the raid as a swoop for militants waging a
three-year-old uprising in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Tension in Ramallah has run especially high since
Israel's security cabinet decided in principle last month
to "remove" Arafat for fomenting violence. Arafat denies
the charge.
Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat denounced
Tuesday's action as "a very dangerous escalation".
Troops and tanks rolled into Ramallah and surrounded
its Abdel Nasser mosque shortly after evening prayers,
declaring a curfew in the area. Hundreds of youths came out
to throw stones at the soldiers, who fired back using live
fire and tear gas.
Tuesday's raid came hours after the Palestinian
president called on international peace mediators to
restrain Israel's military measures.
After Israel killed 10 Palestinians, most of them
civilians, in air strikes in the Gaza Strip on Monday,
Arafat demanded immediate action from the international
patrons of a U.S.-backed peace road map "to stop this
military madness".
