- Story Text: Palestinian gunmen have sprayed gunfire at two Israeli
vehicles on a West Bank road, killing four Israelis and
wounding three others.
Two cars were attacked at a junction on a road south of
the city of Hebron on Friday (July 26) which is mainly used by
Israeli soldiers and Jewish settlers.
Citing Israeli security sources, Israel Radio said the
gunmen drove up to the junction, got out of their car and
fired at the Israeli vehicles before fleeing towards Yatta, a
Palestinian town nearby.
Israel's Channel Ten television said a married couple and
one of their children were among the dead. It was not
immediately clear whether they were settlers.
The attack was shortly before the Jewish Sabbath started
at sunset, when West Bank roads are relatively clear. The army
said it had mounted a search for the gunmen.
There was no immediate comment from the Palestinians.
Palestinians have often attacked Jewish settlers since the
start of an uprising against Israeli occupation in the West
Bank and Gaza Strip in September 2000.
"Lately we have lifted the curfew and eased security in the
area. The result of easing curfew or easing closure in Hebron
- we have four killed tonight," said Israeli Army spokesman
Olivier Rafowicz.
Militant groups have vowed to avenge the deaths of 15
Palestinians, including the commander of the Islamic group
Hamas's military wing and nine children, in an Israeli air
strike on the militants home in Gaza City on Tuesday.
