- Story Text: The U.S military has begun restoring order in Kut, the
city that saw some of the heaviest fighting in Iraq.
U.S marines believed they had broken the back of the
Iraqi republican guards in Kut, the capital city of Iraq's
southern province of Wasit.
On Monday (April 21, 2003) they patrolled the streets and combed
public buildings across the city in an attempt to prevent
looting and ensure protection of public property.
Life seemed to be returning to normal for the residents of
Kut and the Commanding Officer of the Marine Task Force
Tarawa, Captain Ke Yeo said they had been helping the local
people with aid.
"This was a very peaceful occupation and actually we're
just increasing their standard of living by bringing in food
and aid. So far we haven't had any people complain of hunger
or anything like that, so it's been real good," he told
Reuters.
The city's police returned to the streets on Monday and
began controlling traffic as normal life commenced.
A marine convoy moved through the town to continue to
southern Iraq, from where it is thought they will return home.
