- Story Text: A tour coach carrying 48 local Thai tourists crashed off a highway into a river and killed at least 17 in Thailand's northern tourist region.
At least 17 people were killed and about 25 injured on Friday (January 19) when a coach plunged off a mountain road down an embankment into a river in Thailand's northern province of Chiang Mai.
Fifteen died at the crash site, some 50 kilometres north of Chiang Mai city, where the coach crashed at a sharp curve, on the way back from the northern most province of Chiangrai, police said.
The bus had been transporting 48 teachers from Thailand's eastern border province of Chanthaburi to visit the northern provinces.
The driver of the bus was also badly injured, along with the 25 passengers and was sent to a hospital in Chiang Mai city.
