- Story Text: Around 70 families were staying at an evacuation centre in Manila on Sunday (December 11) as police investigated the cause of a plane crash which killed at least 13 people.
Ten others were injured and three people unaccounted for after the twin-engine, four-seater plane crashed into a slum shortly after take-off on Saturday (December 10), local police officials said.
All three on board were killed.
Police have started investigations into the cause of the crash, which they believe may have been caused by engine failure. The pilot contacted the airport to request an emergency landing a few minutes before the crash.
"The objective is to retrieve the engines of the aircraft for further investigation," said Teddie Hermano, a Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines Investigation officer at the site.
Inside the evacuation centre, residents were still in shock after seeing the plane crash into their neighbourhood.
Elvie Palmoe could not sleep last night and kept having nightmares from the incident.
"When I heard a plane flying past us early this morning, I instantly got up. I was afraid it may crash," she said.
Resident Rene Madronio was relieved that his four children managed to escape when the large fire swept their home.
"It's better this way than the plane crashing down our home and killing my family. Look how much damage that crash caused, almost all of the people there got killed," he said.
The local government has offered assistance to the affected families and will continue to help them until they can return to their homes. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
