- Story Text: A South African pilot and a Australian passenger have been killed in a light plane crash in Indonesia's Borneo, officials said on Thursday (April 26).
Indonesian rescuers found the wreckage of the light plane and recovered the victims after it crashed in a mountainous area in Tubang, Kutai Kartanegara, in the remote East Kalimantan province of Borneo.
The two victims were the only people on board the plane.
Operational director of National Search and Rescue Agency, Sunarbowo Sandi, said that the agency had dispatched a team to the location as soon after the coordinates were found.
"After the coordinates of the plane were found, the location of PC-6 Pilatus Porter aircraft, we dispatched our team directly to the location. We found the plane at about at 9.00 local time and at 11.00 local time we evacuated the bodies from the crashed plane," Sandi said in an interview at his office.
The plane, a PC-6 Pilatus Porter, belonged to local airline Susi Air.
It is thought the plane was rented for by a company conducting a survey.
"The information we have so far is the plane was owned by Susi Air and the pilot was named Jonathan Willis. They were conducting a survey flight at Kutai Kartanegara with the other victim who was a cameraperson named Ian," Sandi added.
The bodies were flown out of the area by helicopter.
