- Story Text: Two high-speed trains collided just outside Rome's central station on Thursday (April 26), slightly injuring six people.
One train derailed as it approached Rome's Termini station at around 30 km per hour (18 miles per hour) and ran up against the other, also entering the station on the next platform, the state-owned railway company Trenitalia said.
Both trains, one arriving from Milan in the north and the other from Naples in the south, were members of the Trenitalia's flagship "Red Arrow" fleet of high-speed trains.
None of the passengers were hurt but six crew members had minor injuries, Trenitalia said, adding that it was looking into the cause of the accident.
"Two trains went off track, but neither of them totally. In the first train five carriages out of eleven derailed, and in the second train four carriages out of eleven derailed." said Maurizio Gentile, the production director for the Italian railways network.
"Nothing happened to the passengers in substance, only some light injuries," he added.
Gentile also said that the disruption to train traffic in the station had been minor despite five platforms being temporarily shut down due to the incident.
"I think that a few trains were diverted to the Tiburtina train station, but apart from that I can see little disruption," passenger Giuliana Volterra confirmed.
Other passengers said that the causes of the crash must be ascertained but they did not show concerns for the safety of train transport in general.
"I think the car is the most dangerous mean of transportation of all, one must never forget this," said passenger Ugo Finestrella.
"Nevertheless, there must be great attention on safety in trains and planes. Even on this incident, it is now paramount that they investigate the causes of what happened to make things safer," he added.
This week Ferrari Chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo launched Europe's first privately-owned high-speed train, saying he could provide a better service between major cities than Trenitalia.
The new company, called NTV, hopes to take 25 percent of Italy's high-speed train market by 2014 - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
