- Story Text: French tourists injured in a deadly Dominican Republic accident were being treated at the local hospital in the city of Higuey, about 100 miles east of the capital city of Santo Domingo, on Friday (June 8).
Late on Thursday (June 7), a bus packed with French tourists plowed into a freight train loaded with sugar cane at a railway crossing, killing at least three French nationals and injuring 15 others.
The injured were taken to area hospitals, including one medical facility in Romana, a popular tourist resort.
From his hospital bed at Cedano Hospital, bus passenger Thomas Cedric told a reporter that he had several broken bones.
"My shoulder is broken and my forearm is also broken so it's a little tiring, but the team is very good so everything is okay," he said.
The head of the hospital, Dr. Virgilio Cedano, said several dozen patients were taken to his facility.
"We had 24 patients arrive, all of them injured, some of them with multiple light to moderate injuries and some with severe multiple injuries," he said.
National Police officials said information about the cause of the accident and other details were not immediately available.
Tourist Minister Francisco Javier Garcia called for a thorough investigation and appropriate sanctions.
"This is obviously an unfortunate accident. Right now, we are mainly focused on the part of this situation that has to do with the health of the 24 tourists who were in the accident. We know that three tourists died and, obviously, what we are asking for here from the competent authorities is for there to be a thorough investigation regarding this accident, that the exact causes of how this accident came about be examined and determined and for the corresponding, merited sanctions," he said.
Authorities did not identify the fatalities by name but described them as two men and a woman, and confirmed that they were all French citizens. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
