- Story Text: Relatives of Japanese victims of the Beeing 707 air crash off the Greek coast last Sunday (8 September) arrived in Athens from Tokyo on Wednesday (11 September).
All 79 passengers and nine crew members died when the Trans World Airlines jet crashed into the Ionian sea 65 miles west of the Greek Island of Cephalonia. The aircraft had taken off from Athens about a half an hour earlier.
There were at least 17 Japanese passengers on beard the aircraft. Some of their bodies were among the 24 recovered from the Ionian Sea. The other victims sank with the aircraft to the bottom of the sea.
The Japanese relatives later identified the victims at the Athens mortuary. They were to go on to Cephalonia at the week-end (14 and 15 September) to attend a religious service in memory of the air crash victims.
