- Story Text: Forty people were known on Wednesday (19 April) to have died in Tuesday's (18 April) crash of a London-bound VC-10 aircraft of East African Airways in Addis Ababa. The four-engined jet was carrying 96 passenger and a crew of 11 when it crashed on take-off and burst into flames at the end of the runway. The 'plane was on a flight from Nairobi and had made a scheduled re-fuelling stop in the Ethiopian capital.
Many of the passengers were British schoolchildren returning after their Easter holidays, and at least three of them died in the flaming wreckage. More than 20 survivors were in hospital in Addis Ababa on Wednesday suffering from burns.
The survivors escaped from the exploding wreckage through a hole in the fuselage which appeared as the 'plane broke in two and became engulfed in flames.
Friends and relatives at the airport stood horror-stricken as the aircraft careered off the runway before crashing.
