- Story Text: Spanish film, "The Day of the Beast", has won both the Grand Prize for Best Film and Best Fantasy European Film in the International Festival of Fantasy, Thriller and Science Fiction Films.
The film, by Spain's Alex de la Iglesia, was named winner on Friday (March 22) at the end of the two-week festival.
Almost 50,000 visitors attended the 16th festival in Brussels which featured 57 movies from Europe, America, Japan and China and included six premieres.
The winner was selected by an international jury but the public's choice went to "Over My Dead Body" by Germany's Rainer Matsutani.
In an initiative to promote European "Cinema of the Fantastic", similar festivals in Portugal, Spain and Italy are joining Belgium to create a single award for the best European Fantasy movie. It will be presented in Brussels in December.
It was nevertheless a new film by U.S.-born director Terry Gilliam, "12 Monkeys", that was chosen to headline the event. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
