- Story Text: British singer Lily Allen is about to launch her second album "It's not me, It's you" early in February. In Berlin, the singer talked on Saturday (January 17) with Reuters about her fear of being untalented and being famous. For her second album, the 23 year old has taken a less ska- and more electro-pop-approach than on her first record "Alright, Still...". Most of the album Allen recorded in L.A.
"It's not me, it's you"'s first single "The Fear"
is an ironic piece on celebrity life, Allen explains: "The song is all about not really liking the way that the world has become so obsessed with celebrity culture and aesthetic beauty and money and consumerism. Yet I am a little popstar consumer...asking you all to buy my records. It's kind of meant to be about the confusion of knowing the difference between right or wrong but still being sucked into the wrong."
Allen repeatedly made the headlines with comments on cocaine and recently on having been emotionally neglected by her working mum. Claiming to be a rather open person, who initially made it by blogging and putting her music on the internet, Allen says she has stopped talking about herself in her bloggs so much. "I have stopped blogging so much recently. Just because I can't be bothered with the onslaught of negative press that comes with it the whole time. But you know, when I am kind of on tour and not in England... It's mainly bad when I am in London and I read it all. If I'm away and busy I don't really care then, you know?" Allen is a popular subject of London's paparazzi and yellow press since she openly talked about drugs and has a reputation as party girl.
Last year, her and Sir Elton John clashed at the GQ Men of the Year Awards in London when Elton John made a pointed joke about her drinking too much and she snapped back that at least she was 40 years younger than him and had her life still ahead of her. Antics like this have given Allen "street credit", but the yellow press's constant search for the scandalous aspects of her life make it hard for her at times, the singer said.
"It's hard to stay positive sometimes. But I try my hardest. I am sure one day it will all come crashing down" she says. "Years of therapy to come", she adds laughingly. Allen also reveals a vulnerable side, saying her confidence in her own talent was near non-existent. "I get really intimidated working with different people. I am really convinced... I don't think I am very talented at all" Allen says. "I am sure that people are just about to figure that out, so working with people I don't know is really bad territory for me" she adds.
Allen scored a big hit with her debut album "Alright, Still...". She first burst on to the scene with chart-topping single "Smile" in the summer of 2006. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
