- Story Text: Opera singer Placido Domingo, the new artistic director of the Washington Opera, on Monday (February 12) unveiled its repertoire for the 1996-1997 season.
Domingo's announcement marked his first public move since being named artistic director of the Washington Opera in 1994.
At a news conference at the Kennedy Center, which houses the Washington Opera, Domingo said the new season's operatic schedule would include 66 performances of seven operas, four of them new productions.
The season will open with Domingo playing the lead role of Antonio Carlos Gomes' "Il Guarany". The timing of the production was chosen to mark the centenary of the Brazilian composer's death.
It will be the first major staging of the opera in the United States since 1884.
Domingo spoke of his enthusiasm to introduce new and young performers to Washington's opera lovers. He also pledged to include composers from the Americas into the repertoire.
"It is the duty for the capital of America to have an American composer in every season," he said. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
