- Story Text: Tony nominees Geoffrey Rush, Hope Davis, Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton all react to the announcement on Wednesday (May 6).
Oscar winner Rush is nominated for best performance by a leading actor in a play for his Broadway debut in "Exit the King," competing against Gandolfini and his "God of Carnage" co-star Jeff Daniels, Raul Esparza for "Speed-the-Plow," and Thomas Sadoski for "Reasons to Be Pretty."
Said Rush, "Because its New York and its theater. Its specifically the big, wide commercial world of Broadway which we never anticipated being a part of because our company in Melbourne and Sydney that the play is created for, is a not for profit subsidized scene. To find ourselves in this arena is really as good as we ever wanted it to be."
Hope Davis, nominated for Best Actress for "God of Carnage,"
talked about the entire cast receiving nominations for their work.
Said Davis, "I think the fact that it is all of us is what really matters because our director Matthew, all four of us are on stage all the time, going at it. He was always really worried when the reviews were coming out, and the nominations, he did not want any imbalance. For the show to work, the four of us really have to come at it together. We were all thrilled that all four of us got nominated so nobody got left out in the cold."
Jane Fonda is nominated for best performance by a leading actress in a play for her role in "33 Variations," her first Broadway role in more than 40 years. She is up against "God of Carnage" co-stars Marcia Gay Harden and Hope Davis, and "Mary Stuart" co-stars Janet McTeer and Harriet Walter.
Said Fonda, "I was actually yesterday morning at the airport in Toronto when the news hit. My plane was late otherwise it would have taken me longer to find out. My blackberry started ringing like crazy and I mean, I still can't believe it. I have not slept since I found out. I am so excited."
Singer Dolly Parton, who received a Tony nod for Best Score, reacted to the nomination.
Said Parton, "I feel good. This is a great, great honor. I have been working for four and a half years on this show and it finally paid off to get nominated for a Tony. I was so excited. I could not believe it."
