- Story Text: More than 27 films have premiered at the 22nd annual American Film Festival in Deauville, France. Among them are some industry debuts in directing and producing which are expected to produce some of the hottest new movies for the coming year.
Some people refer to Deauville as the Beverly Hills of France, a mecca for the rich and famous who came in their thousands to this year's American Film Festival.
Making his producing debut after teaming up with Hachette Premiere, Gerard Depardieu attended the premiere of "Decroche Les Etoiles" (Unhook The Stars) with his co-star Gena Rowlands.
Also making his debut in this film, but as director, is Nick Cassavetes following in the footsteps of his father John.
More familiar with the stage than the silver screen,Rowlands plays Mildred Hawkes, a mother who loves cooking, keeping house and providing for her children. When her children leave she finds it difficult to cope with life after motherhood.
Depardieu said he saw himself as merely a driving force behind the work of producer Rene Cleitman. It's been some time since Depardieu made a hit for hollywood but he said he had no desire to be the star.
Also making his debut away from acting, Kevin Spacey of "The Usual Suspects" and "Seven" fame arrived for the premiere of his new movie "Albino Alligator".
The screenplay is a first also for 25 year-old Christian Forte, son of 50's superstar Fabian.
Albino Alligator tells the story of a mixed-up trio of criminals on the run. Matt Dillon ("Drugstore Cowboy"). Gary Sinise ("Forrest Gump"), and William Fichtner ("Heat") set off an alarm while trying to execute the perfect robbery, speed through a federal stake out, crash their car and get mistaken for gun runners into the bargain.
Unaware of the havoc in their wake, they take shelter in the first place they find, Dino's last chance bar, a perfectly maintained relic of the prohibition era with only one way out.
Matt Dillon is "Dova", the point man of the trio. Dova is a control freak who's very intelligent but doesn't have a lot of his own ideas. He's a criminal who happens to be Catholic and he's got some real problems about what he does.
Though Spacey claimed directing was on a par with stage acting in terms of self-satisfaction, Hollywood's hot property has not turned down a profitable film acting career.
Director Joel Schumacher ("The Client") chose Spacey for his latest film based on John Grisham's first novel "A Time To Kill".
Spacey costars in the movie with Sandra Bullock ("While You Were Sleeping", "Speed"), Samuel L. Jackson ("Pulp Fiction") and Matthew McConaughey ("Dazed and Confused").
Heading the celebrity jury at this year's festival is actor Charlotte Rampling supported by 11 international film artists.
While premieres and promotion may be the name of the game here, there is also the competition for best American film from a field of candidates including "The Truth About Cats and Dogs" and "Basquait", headlining David Bowie. The jury will be out on many of the films until the festival finishes on Sunday (September 8). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
