- Story Text: MTV announced nominations for its annual European music awards on Thursday (October 10), and revealed it's asked Oasis to play live at the ceremony, despite the band's chequered history with the channel.
Former "Take That" star Robbie Williams will host the show, to be broadcast on the music television channel.
Before he revealed the nominees, Williams admitted he was nervous at the thought that 300 million people might watch the ceremony and said he preferred not to think about it.
Oasis hit the headlines after appearing at MTV's United States (U.S.) U.S. awards, where singer Liam Gallagher spat on stage and shouted: "Up your bum".
But MTV Europe chiefs are still eager to get Oasis on the bill for the London awards on November 14th.
MTV Europe's senior vice-president Rachel Purnell said they had talked to Oasis and would like them to play.
MTV viewers will vote for the winners from the nominations chosen by an "academy" of 800 music industry figures.
Purnell insisted that the competition was a true representation of what people thought was the best music around, "It's from the street, from the road, from the heart, from the home, and not some sort of bunch of people in a smoky room deciding." Acts booked so far to play at the ceremony at London's Alexandra Palace include George Michael, Bryan Adams, Metallica, The Fugees, Garbage and Smashing Pumpkins.
Boy band Boyzone will also team up with Australian heart-throb Peter Andre for a unique joint performance.
Oasis have been nominated in four out of the eight award categories including best group.
Other nominees for best group are Pulp, Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage and The Fugees.
Best male artist nominees include George Michael, Beck, Eros, Ramazzotti, Nick Cave and Bryan Adams.
Best female artist nominees are Alanis Morissette, Bjork, Neneh Cherry, Joan Osborne and Toni Braxton.
Best rock act nominees include Metallica, Oasis, Die Toten Hosen, Bon Jovi and the Smashing Pumpkins.
Best song nominees include Alanis Morissette with Ironic, The Fugees with Killing Me Softly, Garbage with Stupid Girl, Pulp with Disco 2000 and Oasis with Wonderwall. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
