  • Story Text: Gloria Estefan was granted an audience with the King and of Spain on Wednesday (October 16) during a trip which has seen the singer receiving a number of honours.

    King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia welcomed Estefan to their home in the Palace of Zarzuela.

    The singer is in Madrid for the start of the European leg of her world tour. Her first concert takes place in Madrid's Plaza de Toros on Thursday (October 17) night.

    Sony presented Estefan with a diamond-studded silver and platinum star on Tuesday (October 15) night, acknowledging the millions of copies of her last four albums sold in Spain.

    Estefan's husband Emilio and her son Nayib joined her at the award ceremony.

    Estefan has come a long way since a 1990 motorway accident in her tour bus that left her wheelchair-bound for a year.

    Since then, she has given birth to a daughter, Melody, received a Grammy for her album "Mi Tierra" and a United States (U.S.) Congressional Medal of Honour. A street in Miami has been named after her first band, The Miami Sound Machine.

    This is Estefan's third visit to Madrid. Her current tour is to promote her latest album, "Destiny," which includes the hit single "Party Time." Estefan told a Spanish periodical that the majority of the songs she will perform in Madrid will be in Spanish.
