- Story Text: Shakespeare made his latest cinematic debut with the charity premiere of "Twelfth Night" in London on Thursday (October 24).
The film, shot in Cornwall, gives an Edwardian setting to the romantic comedy.
It stars Helena Bonham Carter, Imogen Stubbs, Ben Kingsley, Nigel Hawthorne and a host of classical British actors.
Most of the film's stars and its director attended Thursday's premiere and party afterwards.
Director Trevor Nunn told Reuters he was lucky he had a wish list of actors to play in the film and "everybody accepted".
"I hope lots of people that wouldn't normally go to the theatre will turn up to see Twelfth Night at the cinema and find they understand it, they get it and enjoy it, and maybe try some more Shakespeare," he said.
Nunn is shortly to take up the role of artistic director of the Royal National Theatre.
Absent from the premiere was Nunn's wife Imogen Stubbs, who plays Viola in the film. She was appearing on stage in Uncle Vanya in the West End.
Helena Bonham Carter was there, however, slipping in early and alone in a short black dress and shawl.
A bearded Nigel Hawthorne, who plays Malvolio, said he enjoyed making the film, which was "romantic and quite sexy".
"Twelfth Night" is the latest in a spate of Shakespearean adaptations for the big screen sparked by Kenneth Branagh's "Henry V" and "Much Ado About Nothing", also made by the Renaissance company which is behind "Twelfth Night".
