- Story Text: The nominees for the for the sixteenth annual "1999 MTV
Video Music Awards" were announced on Wednesday (July 28) at
Lincoln Center in New York City.Chris Rock announced the
nominees while Ricky Martin made a special guest appearance.
Alternative rock band Korn topped the field with nine
nominations for the "1999 MTV Video Music Awards." Ricky
Martin and his video for the wildly successful "Livin' La Vida
Loca" was tied for the second most nominations with six along
with TLC for "No Scrubs" and Will Smith for "Wild Wild West"
and "Miami."
When asked about how he felt about being nominated for 5 MTV
Video Music Awards, Martin said, "The mission here is to
conquer and that's to get the acceptance of the audience,
that'sm mthe most important thing.Hopefully this is only the
beginning."
Lauren Hill and her video, "Doo Wop (That Thing)" and Busta
Rhymes with his video for "What's It Gonna Be" featuring,
Janet Jackson each had five nominations.Madonna, The Back
Street Boys, Jennifer Lopez and Fat Boy Slim each had four
nominations.
Ricky Martin, the Backstreet Boys and TLC are among the
bands slated to perform at the the 16th annual awards.
Will Smith, who championed the big screen this summer with
his film "Wild Wild West" took nominations for best video from
a film and best choreography, while "Miami" was cited for best
male video, best special effects and best cinematography.
Another big screen draw, Jennifer Lopez, was nominated for
best female video, best pop video, best dance video and best
new artist for her, "If You Had my Love."
Luaren Hill was nominated for best female video, best R&B
and Hip Hop video and best art direction.
Other notable nominees include LennyKravitz for "Fly Away",
Britney Spears for "Baby One More Time", 'N Synch for "Tearin'
Up My Heart" and Cher for "Believe."
500 viewers and individuals representing record labels,
music journalists and video producers select the nominess for
awards categories that span wide ranging music forms such as
rap, R&B, dance and rock.
The awards will be given out at the Metropolitan Opera
House at Lincoln Center on September 9, 1999 at 8pm and will
