- Story Text: Director, actress, singer and composer Barbra Streisand's new film opened in New York on Sunday (November 10). "The Mirror Has Two Faces " has an all-star cast and had an all-star guest list for its East Coast premiere.
Streisand and her co-stars Jeff Bridges, Lauren Bacall and Mimi Rodgers, attended the premiere. Stars Robin Williams, Liza Minelli, Barry Manilow, Darryl Hannah, supermodel Elle McPherson and designer Donna Karan also turned out to see the romantic comedy.
"The Mirror Has Two Faces" looks at how myths about sex and beauty complicate relationships between men and women.Streisand, who directed and also produced the movie, plays the role of Rose Morgan, a professor of Romantic Literature at Columbia University who has no romance in her own life and longs for it.
Jeff Bridges plays Gregory Larkin, a mathematician at the same university who has been badly hurt in lust and is looking for a strictly platonic relationship.
These two are destined to meet and it happens when Larkin takes out a personal ad looking for precisely the type of woman he won't fall in lust with. Rose's amoral sister Claire, played by Mimi Rogers, answers the ad in her sister's name.
Grecory and Rose embark on a platonic friendship, and get along so well they decide to get married, much to the chagrin of Rose's self-obsessed mother Hannah. But when Larkin tells her they get along because he isn't attracted to her, Rose's self-esteem plummets. So when Gregory takes a several-month long business trip to Europe, Rose decides to turn the tables and slim down, start using make-up, and generally make herself into a desirable woman.
Upon his return, Gregory is shocked by the changes in his wife, and now the two must find out if their relationship can survive a sexual attraction.
The making of the romantic comedy was marked by the reports of dissension and staff turnover that usually swirl around a Streisand film. Nevertheless, Streisand's co-stars, including Bridges, Lauren Bacall and Mimi Rogers, praised her filmmaking abilities.
Born in Brooklyn on April 24, 1942, Streisand has become one of the world's best known entertainers. She won an Oscar in 1968 for her debut movie performance as Fanny Brice in "Funny Girl" and also won five Emmy Awards for her television special "My Name is Barbra" and many Grammy Awards for her recordings.
Many fans hope she will take home the Oscar for directing after failing to receive nominations for her earlier directing efforts, which include "Yentl" and "The Prince of Tides." Bridges has also been nominated for three Oscars, in 1971 for Best Supporting Actor for "The Last Picture Show," in 1974 for Best Supporting Actor for "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot," and in 1984 for Best Actor for "Starman." Lauren Bacall's film credits are legendary. She made her debut in the 1944 release "To Have and Have Not," in which she first starred with her long-time screen partner and eventual husband Humphrey Bogart. Other films include "Confidential Agent," "How to Marry a Millionaire," and "Murder on the Orient Express." She was recently seen in Robert Altman's "Ready to Wear," and she will soon be seen in the upcoming Jack Lemmon film "My Fellow Americans." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
