But MTV bosses and some of the stars due to headline the big event started the party early with a preview bash on Tuesday night (November 5).
The MTV European Awards are still young - the inaugural event was held in Berlin in 1994. For their third year MTV have chosen London, the world's current capital of cool according to Newsweek magazine, for the event.
Former member of the band Take That, 22-year-old Robbie Williams will host the awards ceremony. Williams made a brief appearance on Tuesday (November 5) evening and said he was "looking forward to doing the show" which he said was " a great opportunity for me and for MTV".
The band Jamiroquai, who have not been nominated for an award but are due to perform at next week's event also came to the preview party. Jamiroquai lead singer 'JK' was in high spirits, lounging in one of the photo galleries and playing tipsy with his mate Robbie (Williams).
Nominated for awards and also slated to appear are George Michael,The Smashing Pumpkins, the Fugees, Bryan Adams and Garbage.
President and Business Director of MTV Europe, Peter Einstein told guests packing the National Portrait Gallery the venue was "far more appropriate for MTV than you might think". He said "pop stars are now cultural icons" and pointed out portraits of the Beatles, David Bowie, the Rolling Stones and others hung in the gallery, alongside those of great figures of politics and literature.
A British political figure of the three dimensional kind was also present at the event, mingling with the pop stars in her scarlet power jacket, British Heritage secretary Virginia Bottomley. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
