- Story Text: The just-married Daniel Day-Lewis attended the Los Angeles premiere of his latest film -- an adaptation of Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" -- on November 20 along with co-stars Winona Ryder and Joan Allen.
The film's director Nicholas Hytner and Miller, who wrote the screenplay, attended.
Despite the smattering of stars at the premiere, most of the media had flocked to catch a glimpse of Daniel Day-Lewis and his new bride, Miller's daughter Rebecca. Day-Lewis married the 32-year old filmmaker this month at a private ceremony in Vermont. They met on the set of the film.
The film is based on Miller's classic play of the same name.
The play was first produced in the Martin Beck Theatre in New York in January, 1953. It has since become one of the most widely known and performed plays of the American theatre.
It tells the story of the infamous witch hunts that happened in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. Believing that the Devil was loose in Salem and had taken over the bodies of several young women, the town's leaders set out to destroy the evil spirits by burning their female hosts at the stake.
The story was originally seen as a response to the anti-Communist hysteria inspired by U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy's crusade in the American Congress.
Daniel Day-Lewis plays farmer John Proctor, a man whose recent affair with the young Abigail Williams, played by Ryder, has deeply wounded his marriage to Elizabeth Proctor, played by last year's Oscar nominee for "Nixon," Joan Allen.
When the witch hysteria starts sweeping the village, Abigail uses the situation to try to get rid of Elizabeth to leave her free to carry on her relationship with John Proctor.
The film was directed by Nicholas Hytner, who last helmed the Oscar nominated drama "The Madness of King George," and its screenplay was adapted from the original play by Arthur Miller himself. It marks the first time he's adapted one of his own works into film.
Day-Lewis won an Oscar for his performance as the crippled writer and artist Christy Brown in "My Left Foot," and received another nomination for his role in "In the Name of the Father." This is his second film with Winona Ryder. The two played together in Martin Scorsese's "The Age of Innocence." "The Crucible" opens in New York on November 27, in Los Angeles December 11, and around the rest of the United States later this year. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
